What a DJ deck is

In Beat Battles a DJ deck is the mixer on your avatar, not a separate furniture piece you sit behind in first person. The loop shop screenshot is the clearest reference: you stand in a cyan ring facing three crates, wearing a white hoodie, headphones, and a backpack mixer with two platters and a grid of colored pads. That backpack is the deck. Other people on the 25-player server see it in the lobby, in the shop, and from the pit during a battle.

Official copy says you unlock new DJ decks as you play. It does not publish a SKU list, so this page describes the object and the likely unlock path instead of inventing names. For ranks (starter versus later unlocks, high contrast versus camouflage), use the DJ decks tier list.

Anatomy of the starter mixer

From the shop camera:

• Two platters stacked vertically on the left of the board. They read as circles even at a distance.
• Pad grid on the right, multicolor, like a clip launcher. This is the loudest part of the silhouette.
• Headphones on the avatar, which complete the DJ read even if someone is looking at your head instead of your back.
• Worn on the back, so the pit sees it while you face the booth speakers.

You do not need a named legendary board to look like a DJ. The starter kit already does that job. If a later unlock keeps platters and pads, it is still a deck. If a later unlock turns into a generic bag, it is fashion with a weaker read.

How unlocks likely tie to production level

Overtune’s own feature list groups new DJ decks with stages, effects, catalogue expansion, and leveling production to climb billboards. The clean reading is:

1. You make and perform tracks.
2. Production level rises.
3. Deck, stage, and effect slots open.
4. Billboards reflect that climb.

What we do not assume:

• That the gem shop sells named decks. Visible gem rows are Single Loop Box 100, Triple Loop Bundle 250, and Full Pack Crate 1100.
• That a deck changes the sequencer. Lanes stay Drum, Bass, Guitar, FX, Piano Roll, Keys, and Synth.
• That a deck auto-wins stars.
• That cassette currency (shown next to gems) has a documented deck price.

If a patch adds a shop row that clearly sells a mixer, this page will say so. Until then, treat decks as production unlocks and spend gems on loops. Getting Started is the better first hour than standing in the crate ring hoping a backpack drops.

Why the mixer on your avatar matters

Beat Battles is a social contest. The HUD labels Current DJ and YOU’RE UP, but plenty of voters are watching the world, not the chips. A backpack mixer is a moving sign that says the person at the booth is the performer. That sign has to survive:

• Dark club floors and cyan ground rings.
• Stacked speakers with their own neon.
• Flame columns on the starter stage.
• Starter Spotlights that can wash pale colors.
• 24 other avatars dancing in the pit.

If your mixer disappears in that mess, people still hear the track, but they pair it with a random crowd body. Stars get sloppy. Equip the board that still looks like a mixer from the pit, then dress the rest of the outfit around it. More on pairing with the room is on Stages.

Decks versus other unlock buckets

Keep the catalogue straight so you do not shop the wrong pipe:

A pretty deck on an empty Drum lane is still an empty Drum lane. If you are deciding between cosmetics and catalogue, open Stage Effects only after C and G feel comfortable, and open the loop shop when a lane is missing. Decks are the last of those problems, not the first.

Practical checklist before you chase a new deck

1. Can you finish a remix without staring at the shop? If not, stay on Getting Started.
2. Do Drum and Bass exist in your catalogue? If not, gems go to boxes, not to hoping a mixer appears.
3. Have you performed once on the starter stage so you know how the backpack reads under flames and truss light?
4. When production offers a deck, screenshot it from the pit, not only from the shop ring.
5. If the new board is harder to see than the starter, keep the starter for battles and wear the unlock in the lobby.

This checklist is boring on purpose. BETA catalogues change. Readable mixers do not go out of date.

Sharing tracks and looking like the author

Official features include sharing best tracks with friends. The deck is part of that screenshot. A mixer that reads in a thumbnail helps people recognize you on billboards later. That is not a rank, just a reason not to equip a board that vanishes on camera. Identity is allowed. Identity that costs you votes is a bad trade for a contest game.
